PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Portland Police Bureau announced it is implementing holiday walking beats for the second year in a row, which will last through the end of December.
PPB officers and Public Safety Support Specialists kicked off the increased on-foot patrols on Friday. Areas of patrol include popular destinations this time of year, such as shopping centers and holiday community events.
“Walking beats go a long way in addressing my goals of reducing crime and the fear of crime and transforming the dynamic between police and the people we serve,” Chief Bob Day said in a statement. “In addition, community engagement is near and dear to my heart and I believe these foot patrols will make a meaningful difference in our community this holiday season.”
The holiday walking beats are returning after Day said he received positive feedback from the community last year.
The citywide patrols will run from noon to 8 p.m. every day from now until Dec. 31.
