Hundreds of dog food bags recalled for ‘contamination’ that can spread to humans
A dog food maker has recalled 400 bags of treats over possible contamination that could infect humans.
Carolina Prime Pet, Inc, announced on Friday it is recalling 400 bags of 16-ounce Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips that may contain Salmonella.
‘Salmonella can affect animals eating the product and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,’ stated the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Saturday.
The purple-and-black bags have a lot number of 20051324L2 and expiration date of November 13, 2025.
They were sold on the Hollywood Feed website and distributed to its stores in 19 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
No illnesses related to the product had been reported as of Thursday.
Pets with Salmonella may experience diarrhea with or without blood, vomiting, fever, appetite loss and abdominal pain.
‘Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans,’ stated the FDA.
Humans who contract Salmonella can have similar symptoms as their pets like diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal cramping and nausea. In rare cases, the bacteria can cause arterial infections, arthritis, endocarditis, urinary tract issues, muscle pain and eye irritation.
Dog owners whose pups have consumed the treats and show symptoms are advised to contact a veterinarian. They should contact North Carolina-based Carolina Prime Pet for a replacement or refund.
The dog food recall comes nearly two years after the Lidl supermarket chain recalled its Favorina branded advent calendar that had chocolate with a creamy filling over Salmonella contamination fears.
Salmonella cause roughly 1.35 million infections in US annually, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates.
