He admitted that the lifestyle of a darts player plus eating at the wrong times caused his weight to balloon up to 160kgs (25st).
However, after pressure from his family and the past tragedy of his father dying at just 57 due to heart failure, he opted to do something about his weight.
Speaking on the TungstenTales YouTube channel, he said: “People had seen me at my worst.
“I’ve always been big but when I got a tour card I stopped working and the lifestyle of a darts player isn’t the best.
“You are eating at the wrong time of the night because you have to.
“There is nothing else open so it is all junk food.
“So I blew out really badly until I came back to Australia.

“My kids were the catalyst to lose the weight because my father passed away at the age of 57 with heart failure.
“So they were always into me ‘you’re going like big pop’ and then my brother actually played in the inaugural World Series with me back in 2013.
“He had the weight loss surgery, and I saw him go through it, so in March, I touched the weight of 160kgs, and I just made the decision that the time was right.
“I’m down at the moment to 110kgs, so 50 kgs that I have lost in six or seven months and I would do it again tomorrow.”
Mathers continued to discuss the results of his massive weight loss.
He insisted that he has more energy and is not left in pain after two day darts tournaments.
He added: “I have so much more energy after playing a weekend of darts. instead of having sore knees, I can come home and run around with the kids.
“They are happy that I’ve done it, so I’m ecstatic that I’ve done something about my weight.”
BELOW is a list of Darts world champions by year.
The list does not include winners from the pre-Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) era or BDO world champions.
That means Raymond van Barneveld, for example, is only listed once – Barney also won four BDO titles – and none of Eric Bristow’s five BDO titles are included.
