GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. (NEWS10) -- The Great Barrington brush fire, also known as the Butternut Fire, is now 60% contained as of Wednesday; a growth from 40% on Tuesday. The Great Barrington Fire Department expects the containment percentage to grow rapidly as more data is collected.
An estimated 1,670 acres have burned, but this number is not final. When more complete data is collected a solidified number of acres will be accounted for, but the fire department wanted to emphasize that this does not mean the fire grew; it means the data has become more accurate.
The fire department expects the fire's perimeter to equal as much as 10 miles. It reasserts the notion that the fire is still dangerous to be in and around and encourages residents to steer clear of it.
