Ange Postecoglou has been talking about injured Tottenham goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, at this afternoon’s press conference ahead of the match against AS Roma.
During Tottenham Hotspur’s commanding 4-0 Premier League win against Manchester City, Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was involved in an incident that initially seemed manageable but has since spiralled into a significant concern.
The injury itself occurred during a clash in the 30th minute, with Savinho colliding with Vicario in an unfortunate challenge.
Though he soldiered on after receiving treatment from the medical team, his discomfort was apparent after he was spotted limping through the media mixed zone.
Those fears were validated when Spurs issued an official statement revealing the extent of the damage to his right ankle.
Surgery has since been performed, though a return date remains uncertain, with sources speculating a potentially long spell on the sidelines.
This development has thrust Fraser Forster, the experienced backup goalkeeper, into the spotlight, with Brandon Austin now stepping up as his deputy.
As Spurs prepare to face AS Roma in the Europa League, the question remains whether Forster who has played in the last two Europa League matches will continue in goal, or if Austin might be handed an opportunity to prove his mettle.
Speaking to football.london, Ange Postecoglou provided clarity on Guglielmo Vicario’s injury and the club’s plans moving forward.
He said: “Bit of a shock first of all. We saw he’d picked up the injury during the game. We saw him at half time but there was no doubt about continuing. He was a bit sore after the game but still didn’t seem anything like that.
“It’s a testament to the man though and externally people will realise what we see internally. He’s hard as nails. Knowing him he’ll be pushing his limits to get back and knowing him you’ll be getting daily updates on his Instagram.”
On how long Vicario will be out for, Postecoglou added: “It’s not going to be weeks. It’ll be months. He’s had his surgery and because it’s Vic and I don’t like giving timelines as it puts expectations on them. Once we’re in the rehab stage we’ll know more.”
The injury to Guglielmo Vicario comes at a critical juncture in Tottenham’s season, forcing the club to reassess its immediate and long-term plans between the sticks.
While Fraser Forster’s experience offers stability, there are questions about whether he can maintain the level of performance required across multiple competitions.
Brandon Austin, on the other hand, represents a gamble—one that might pay off if Postecoglou is willing to take the risk.
