The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party announced that it would end its protests to prevent further violence following a deadly crackdown on demonstrators in Islamabad.
The party stated on Wednesday, November 27th, that dozens of “unarmed citizens” lost their lives during the police crackdown in Islamabad.
PTI, which had called for demonstrations demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from prison, clarified in its statement that it was halting protests temporarily to prevent Islamabad from turning into a “slaughterhouse for unarmed citizens.”
Yesterday, thousands of protesters clashed with police while trying to overcome barriers near Islamabad. The violence continued into Tuesday night in the capital, resulting in several deaths.
CNN reported that at least six people, including three police officers, were killed. However, PTI claimed that “33 bodies were taken to a single hospital, with more bodies still lying in D-Chowk [in front of Pakistan’s Parliament] and surrounding areas.”
PTI labeled the police crackdown as “brutality,” stating, “Considering the government’s savage actions and plans to turn the federal capital into a slaughterhouse for unarmed citizens, we are temporarily suspending our peaceful protests.”
The decision to suspend protests highlights PTI’s concern over escalating violence and loss of life. While the protests have been put on hold, the underlying grievances remain unresolved, raising questions about the future course of action.
This incident underscores the need for accountability and a peaceful resolution to political conflicts in Pakistan. Both the government and opposition must seek dialogue to address the crisis and prevent further unrest.
