South Africa will bid to keep their hopes to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final next year alive when they begin their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Wednesday. Both SA and the Lankans are coming into this series having whitewashed their previous oppositions.
South Africa hammered Bangladesh 2-0 away from home with pacer Kagiso Rabada completing his 300 wickets in Test cricket. While Sri Lanka clobbered New Zealand 2-0 at home before the Black Caps went on to whitewash India earlier this month.
In recent history, the last nine Tests between South Africa and Sri Lanka have been fairly even with South Africa winning 5 and Sri Lanka winning four times. SA will be boosted by the return of their regular Test skipper Temba Bavuma.
Sri Lanka will bank on young in-form batter Kamindu Mendis, who averages 79.25 from nine innings away from home. If Prabath Jayasuriya gets three wickets in Durban – his 17th Test – he will become the joint second-fastest bowler to 100 Test wickets, behind George Lohmann, who made his debut in the 19th century. Among players active since 1950, only Yasir Shah has done it in 17 Tests.
