Salvation Army adds new ways to give: 'not just cash and coins'
LOUISIANA (KLFY) -- The holiday season is about giving. This year, it's never been easier to give back to the community, as there are new ways you can contribute to families who rely on the Salvation Army.
Trends show people aren't carrying cash or coins or shopping in person like they used to. That's why the Salvation Army is doing things a little differently this year.
"So, you know, not just cash and coins in the kettle anymore but other ways that people can support the Salvation Army," said Salvation Army Capt. Bruce Williams.
Many people agree cash is becoming a thing of the past.
"There's many times that I want to give coming in and coming out, but I don't have the cash in my wallet like I used to carry," one woman said.
"In my opinion, I feel like people don't really carry cash anymore or coins. They are really just online shop, Amazon, Walmart," a Lafayette teen told News 10.
"To me, people shop more online than in stores because most people don't want to get out of their house, or they'd just rather have it shipped to them," another added.
The Salvation Army has added new ways to give with QR codes. You can find it online or anywhere you see one of the iconic red kettlebell ringers.
"You'll probably hear us before you see us, but they'll be out there smiling and collecting those funds as well," Williams said.
This year, however, you can tap or scan your phone as you're doing your holiday shopping.
"The great thing is the donations that are made here stay here to help the people that are in need here in Acadiana," Williams said.
"It's an important thing. These funds that are raised during this Christmas season help us to function throughout the whole year. So, the kindness and the generosity that we see here in Acadiana is exceptional. I moved here from Georgia, and I just love the people here and their willingness to step up and help those in need," he continued.
Every Salvation Army donation provides a meal to someone hungry, helps keep the lights on for a family struggling to pay a utility bill, or gives a helping hand in disaster relief.
