IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- A 47-year-old New Iberia resident who was riding a bicycle on E. Admiral Doyle Drive on Sunday night died after they were struck from behind by a Jeep, according to Louisiana State Police.
In a news release, troopers said the crash occurred around 10 p.m. Sunday on E. Admiral Doyle Drive near Blanchard Road and claimed the life of Sonephet Souriyakhamphong.
Souriyakhamphong was traveling east on E. Admiral Doyle, near the right fog line, the same time a 2015 Jeep Renegade was traveling east on the same road.
"For reasons still under investigation, the Jeep struck the rear of the bicycle," troopers said.
According to the news release, Souriyakhamphong was not wearing a helmet and their bicycle was not equipped with rear lights or reflectors. Souriyakhamphong sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The driver of the Jeep was not injured.
Troopers said the driver of the Jeep is not suspected of being impaired. The driver voluntarily provided a breath sample which showed no alcohol detected, troopers said. A standard toxicology sample was collected from the bicyclist and submitted for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
