New Delhi: Bihar batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player to be sold in the history of an IPL auction on Monday, November 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Suryavanshi was sold for a whopping Rs 1.10 crore to Rajasthan Royals after an intense bidding war with Delhi Capitals (DC).

Vaibhav Suryavanshi recently turned 13, he made his first-class cricket debut in January 2024, where he scored 31 runs in 2 innings. With this, he became the second youngest player to play in the Ranji Trophy for Bihar. He has so far scored 100 runs in 5 matches (10 innings) for Bihar, in which his best score has been 41 runs.
However, there is some controversy over his age, as in 2023 he said in an interview that he was born on 27 September 2009, which could make him half a year older. Despite this, his future in cricket looks bright considering his recent performance and great talent. Recently, in the Under-19 Test matches, he scored a century in 58 balls against Australia, which was the fastest century in India’s Under-19 cricket history. He then scored 104 runs in the first innings of the first Test, helping India eventually win.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s base price in this IPL 2025 mega auction has been set at Rs 30 lakh, and he will be listed in set 68, his list serial number is 491. Many teams can bid on him during his bidding process in IPL 2025, and it will be interesting to see which franchise he becomes a part of in the future. At the age of 12 or 13, when many children play cricket just for fun or do not know much about this game, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has not only made his first-class debut, but has also created a world record by scoring an explosive century against Australia in the recent Under-19 Youth Test for India. He is the youngest batsman in the world to score a century in youth cricket.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Suryavanshi said about that innings that he was not under any pressure but was playing his natural game.
He said, “I had made my debut for India in the Under-19 ODI last year, so there was no such pressure. I just had in mind how much difference there would be between white and red ball cricket and I adapted myself to it immediately. Australian bowlers were attacking me with short balls, so I also replied to them with aggressive cricket in their style.”
Suryavanshi was not a part of the Bihar team in the first match of the Ranji Trophy because he was with the Indian Under-19 team then and was playing the Youth Test against Australia Under-19 in Chennai. Bihar had to face an innings defeat against Haryana in the first match in just one and a half days. But Suryavanshi has joined the team for the match against Bengal and will be available for selection. Suryavanshi said, “I had a conversation with BCA and they asked me when I can join the team, to which I told them that it is not possible for me to join the match on October 11. I am with the team from Bihar’s second match, which will be played against Bengal in Kolkata.”
Suryavanshi scored 104 runs in 62 balls in the Youth Test played in Chennai at the age of 13 years and 187 days. In doing so, he surpassed the world record of Bangladesh’s current Test captain Nazmul Hussain Shanto. Nazmul scored a century in Youth ODI cricket at the age of 14 years and 241 days. While the next name in this list is of Pakistan’s legendary batsman Babar Azam, Babar scored a century in Youth ODI at the age of 15 years and 48 days.
Not only this, Suryavanshi also performed a feat in a domestic Under-19 ODI competition of Bihar, when he played an unbeaten innings of 332 runs in a match of the Randhir Verma Under-19 ODI tournament under the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA).
When Suryavanshi was talking to ESPNcricinfo, he told that his age is currently 13 years and 197 days. It seemed as if Suryavanshi knew that this question would definitely be asked of him, so he was fully prepared.
