DEAR DEIDRE: MY closest friend is desperate to have a baby via IVF but now I’ve found out I’m pregnant.
We are both 33. We have known one another since school and we have been there for one another through all of our highs and lows.
My friend has been trying to conceive for four years but after a few tests, doctors told her that her egg count was really low.
So they’ve gone for fertility treatment which has cost them a fortune.
I’ve been married for two years. We decided to start a family but we didn’t think it would happen so quickly.
My husband is 37 and we’re so excited but I’m worried about telling my friend.
In my heart, I know she’ll be happy for me but I’ve been with her many times when she’s been upset that other friends or family have announced a pregnancy.
DEIDRE SAYS: When you’re longing for a baby, it probably feels as if everyone around you is getting pregnant and it will be no different for your friend.
Find the time to tell her privately and explain that you don’t want to add to her distress with your news and explain you’re going to give her some space.
Explain that you’ll be there for her forever and when she wants to reconnect with you, you’ll be ready.
Your worry shows your true friendship and love for her. Because of your bond, she is bound to be happy for you even if she doesn’t react in the way you hope for.
Be ready for a few tears but I hope it goes well.
