'Appalling': George Conway has a prediction about 'spineless' GOP senators

Although attorney George Conway has been a prominent figure in the conservative movement for decades, he has made no secret of his total disdain for President-elect Donald Trump and the far-right MAGA movement. Conway aggressively fundraised and campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris' 2024 campaign, and he predicted the worst when Trump defeated her.

Conway has been vehemently critical of Trump's picks for his second administration. During a late November appearance on The Bulwark's vodcast, the attorney told host Sarah Longwell —another Never Trump conservative who supported Harris — that he has little faith in GOP senators' willingness to reject the president-elect's most "appalling" nominees.

Longwell argued that it was an encouraging sign when former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) withdrew from consideration for U.S. attorney general. But Conway cautioned against thinking that "spineless" GOP senators will have the courage to stand up to Trump when he nominates woefully unqualified people for top positions.

Conway was especially critical of former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Trump's pick for intelligence director), Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (Trump's choice to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), and Pete Hegseth (who Trump has picked for secretary of defense).

"Tulsi and Hegseth and RJK Jr. — they all should go down too," Conway told Longwell. "But I wouldn't bet that they will all go down…. (Trump is) still going to be appointing bad people, and he's going to be doing it continually — and keep doing it and doing it and doing it."

Nonetheless, Conway argued that a few conservative GOP senators — namely, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) — may have enough of a "spine" to reject Trump's more "appalling" nominees. In 2025, Republicans will have a 53-47 majority in the U.S. Senate.

Conway told Longwell, "The saving grace is the slimness of the majority. You lose Murkowski and Collins, and you're almost done. All it takes is one or two more…. I don't think all of these people will go through, but I think some of them will. And the fact that any of them could be considered is appalling."
