New Delhi: Stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah secured his first Test victory as India triumphed over Australia by 295 runs in the opening Border-Gavaskar Trophy match at Optus Stadium in Perth on November 25. However, with Rohit Sharma returning to the team, Bumrah will once again pass on the captaincy to him.
The Mumbai Indians pacer played down any aspirations for captaincy, reaffirming that Rohit Sharma is the team’s established leader. He mentioned that he was simply covering for Rohit and is now ready to contribute in whatever role is needed.
“When you get out on a low score, sometimes bowlers get desperate. The message was clear to stick to the plans. Very happy to get the first Test win as captain. Even when I am not captain, I look to contribute as much as possible. Rohit Sharma is the captain of our side, I was just filling in. I am going to help in whatever capacity I can”, he said at the post-match presentation.

Jasprit Bumrah was the standout performer in the match, claiming eight wickets overall. His remarkable five-wicket haul in the first innings set the stage for India’s remarkable recovery after they were reduced to just 150 runs.
Previously, Bumrah had captained India in the rescheduled fifth Test against England in 2022, where the team faced defeat. However, in his second leadership role, Bumrah showcased his leadership qualities with a standout performance.
“We were really well prepared, so I kept telling everyone to trust their process and abilities. Experience matters on certain days, but faith can lead to something special. I couldn’t ask for more,” the 30-year-old added.
