Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Blake Snell has already begun meeting with his potential new employers. Snell has already met with the Boston Red Sox and the Dodgers, according to sources. Snell is expected to meet with the Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, and any other clubs who are looking for a front-line starting pitcher.
It is worth noting that Snell’s free agency in 2024 went well into Spring Training, with Snell not agreeing to his contract with the San Francisco Giants until March 19th. He is showing that he wants to reach a contract for the 2025 season much earlier. In regards to the Dodgers, Rosenthal writes:
The World Series champion Dodgers also would be an attractive option, particularly if Snell, a Seattle-area native, wants to stay on the West Coast. Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman was running the Rays when Tampa Bay selected Snell 52nd overall in 2011.
Rosenthal also mentions to not count out the New York teams as being interested in Snells’ services. However, any team looking for a starter may be scheduling meetings to sign Snell.
In terms of a fit for the Mets, Snell would provide them with a frontline starter who has won two Cy Young awards. There are some questions about his durability, as Snell has only thrown more than 128 innings twice in his nine-year MLB career. However, in the two seasons that he did, he won a Cy Young and pitched 180 innings in both seasons. Snell has big swing-and-miss stuff and threw a no-hitter for the Giants in the 2024 season. While Snell has always been wild, he manages to limit hits, holding his opponents to sub-.200 batting averages each of the last seasons. Snell could slot in as the ace of the rotation ahead of Kodai Senga and David Peterson and provide some veteran leadership to a rotation that might include three new starting pitchers.
