COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The sentencing for a former Columbus police officer found guilty of murder in the killing of an unarmed man has been postponed.
According to a Franklin County Common Pleas Court official, the Nov. 25 sentencing date for Adam Coy is being rescheduled. The official said this is likely because Coy's attorneys have filed a motion for a new trial.
Coy, 48, was found guilty earlier this month of murder, reckless homicide, and felonious assault in the Dec. 2020 shooting death of 47-year-old Andre Hill. He is facing a mandatory 15 years to life in prison.
Online court records have not yet been updated to show when Coy's sentencing hearing will be held.
In their newest filing, Coy's attorneys argue that prosecutors withheld evidence during the trial that they believe could have exonerated their client.
On Dec. 22, 2020, at about 1:50 a.m., Coy shot Hill four times while responding to a nonemergency suspicious vehicle call on Columbus’ northwest side. Coy fired at Hill after he began exiting a garage at Coy’s request, with a lit phone screen held up in his left hand and his right hand at his side, not clearly visible due to a parked car. Coy testified he believed Hill had a silver revolver in his right hand, which ended up being a set of keys.
