LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Less than one day after deciding not to follow a consulting firm's recommendation to close two schools, the Lafayette Parish School System has announced a temporary hiring freeze in the district.
In a Thursday news release, LPSS said the freeze is a "response to current economic challenges and a commitment to fiscal responsibility."
"This measure reflects the district's dedication to responsibly managing resources during these uncertain times while maintaining the highest standards of education and support for students and staff," the release read.
The strategic planning firm Civic Solutions Group had recommended the closure of Duson Elementary, S.J. Montgomery Elementary, Katharine Drexel Elementary, Acadian Middle, Lafayette Middle and Comeaux High School. But, in a meeting to ratify the recommendations Wednesday night, the board voted not to close Duson Elementary and Comeaux High School.
Officials said all current vacancies—including administrative, teaching, and support staff roles—will be placed on hold unless deemed "critical to maintaining essential operations." Exceptions may be made for positions deemed "vital to the immediate health, safety, or academic success of students."
Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. said he emphasizes the importance of transparency and collaboration during this period.
"We understand the challenges this hiring freeze may present and are committed to providing the necessary support to our staff and schools," Touchet said. "Our goal is to ensure the continued quality of education and services while safeguarding the district's long-term stability."
Touchet said employees are encouraged to communicate any concerns or questions regarding the hiring freeze with their supervisors.
