Hundreds of drivers were left stuck in their vehicles in freezing cold conditions after a serious collision on the M2.
The eastbound carriageway is still fully closed, and one lane is closed westbound, between junction 6 for Faversham and five for Sittingbourne in Kent.
National Highways say the crash involved a lorry and a pedestrian, and the closure will be in place until at least midday on Thursday after the collision at about 8pm on Wednesday evening.
Drivers trapped within the eastbound closure were stuck in their cars for hours, with all traffic finally being turned around and freed at about 2am.
A diversion route has been put in place, and Kent Police are at the scene for ‘extensive investigation work’.
Meanwhile, yellow Met Office weather warnings for snow and ice have been extended across parts of the UK until Sunday, after two days of train cancellations and road delays caused by the freezing weather.
