Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-match ban provides Archie Gray with an opportunity to show what he is capable of in midfield for Tottenham.
Of the young players who joined Tottenham Hotspur this summer, Archie Gray has arguably had the strongest start. Lucas Bergvall has had fewer opportunities due to competition for places in attacking midfield and Wilson Odobert has struggled with significant injuries.
With Rodrigo Bentancur now set to miss the next seven consecutive matches of FA competitions, Archie Gray has the kind of opportunity young players dream about. A chance to really establish themselves and make a mark.
The likelihood is that Yves Bissouma will start these games as the deepest midfielder. However, the last month has often featured Bissouma and Bentancur being substituted for one another during games. Archie Gray will need to be ready to come on and play in midfield or perhaps take on even more responsibility in the Premier League, if Bissouma becomes unavailable.
Gray has had relatively few career minutes in midfield, with most of his senior performances being at fullback. Asking him to emulate Bissouma or Bentancur by turning through a press or carrying up the pitch against the best opposition will be a significant challenge.
Playing in defence currently provides Gray the security of playing with much of the game in front of him without requiring the omnidirectional awareness of someone playing in the middle of the pitch. That being said, with Gray’s overall game being more naturally suited to midfield (albeit a box-to-box 8), he will likely grab the opportunity with both hands.
Postecoglou values his young player’s learning through adversity. Gray’s willingness to help the team in any position asked of him, is indicative of a player with the attitude to play bravely. He is a technically proficient and athletically unique player for his age. While he certainly lacks the experience, it may be that his success in midfield will come from his application rather than his aptitude.
With young players, there is a prevailing idea that, like a fragile egg, they should be initiated gently to the sizzling frying pan of senior football.
However, the best opportunities are rarely presented and more often seized. While there may be a greater perceived risk in throwing Gray into midfield at such a young age, it could be a definitive moment in his footballing career. Leaping from the frying pan into the fire where his skills can be forged.
