Pakistani media have reported that the federal government has approved a large-scale military operation in Balochistan in response to the rising insecurity in the province.
The Dawn newspaper reported on Tuesday, November 19, that Pakistan’s high-level government committee has sanctioned an extensive military campaign against insurgents in Balochistan.
The approval comes amidst a significant surge in security incidents in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, intensifying the need for a robust response.
in latest incident, the Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported that at least 19 security personnel were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province within the past 24 hours.
In the Janikhel area of Bannu, a suicide bombing at a checkpoint killed 11 personnel and critically injured two others. The attack was followed by an armed assault by militants.
In a separate incident, eight security personnel were killed and three injured in a clash with militants in the Tirah area. This attack targeted a military post near the central Bagh Maidan area, highlighting the growing security challenges in the region.
Earlier, a suicide bomber targeted the Quetta railway station, the capital of Balochistan, killing at least 26 people, including 16 Pakistani soldiers, and injuring 61 others.
Pakistan’s high-level government committee, which includes senior military officials, stated that terrorist groups act on behalf of foreign countries and hinder Pakistan’s economic growth.
The Pakistani Prime Minister’s Office emphasized the need for comprehensive political support for the military operation and the revival of a national counterterrorism campaign.
This decision underscores the growing urgency for Pakistan to address its escalating security crisis. The federal government’s approval of a large-scale military campaign reflects the gravity of the threat posed by insurgent groups in the region.
However, the success of the operation will depend not only on military efforts but also on addressing the socio-economic grievances that fuel the insurgency.
A coordinated approach involving political, economic, and social reforms is essential for lasting peace and stability in Balochistan and beyond.
