SF Giants hire former GM Bobby Evans as adviser to Buster Posey: report
As Buster Posey navigates his inaugural season as the Giants’ president of baseball operations, he’ll have a familiar face in his corner to offer guidance.
The Giants are hiring former general manager Bobby Evans as an adviser to Posey, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. San Francisco will also be hiring Jeff Berry as an adviser as well. Berry was Posey’s agent at CAA but left earlier this year.
Evans served as San Francisco’s general manager from 2015-18 and was fired prior to the final week of the ’18 season. During those four seasons, the Giants went 308-340.
Evans, 55, initially joined the organization in 1994 as a minor-league administrative assistant and became then-general manager Brian Sabean’s top lieutenant, helping build the Giants teams that won the World Series in 2010, ’12 and ’14. Prior to becoming general manager, Evans worked as the team’s director of minor league administration, director of player personnel and vice president of baseball operations.
Berry and Evans are Posey’s latest hires as he fills out his front office. At the beginning of the month, Posey hired Zack Minasian as the team’s new general manager. Last week, Posey hired former Giant Randy Winn as vice president of player development.
The Giants have also had several people leave the front office in recent weeks. Pete Putila, the team’s general manager in 2023 and 2024 under Farhan Zaidi, joined the Braves as their assistant general manager of international scouting. Additionally, Michael Schwartze, the team’s director of baseball analytics under Zaidi, also joined Atlanta.
Along with the front office departures, manager Bob Melvin’s coaching staff has experienced a shakeup. Pitching coach Bryan Price departed after one season, resulting in J.P. Martinez being elevated to pitching coach after four years of serving as a deputy. In addition to Price, two of San Francisco’s hitting coaches left for other organizations. Justin Viele, who had coached with San Francisco since 2020, joined the Texas Rangers while Pedro Guerrero, a hitting coach since 2021, joined the Miami Marlins.
