Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) used some colorful language during a House committee meeting Tuesday to indicate his excitement for tech billionaire Elon Musk's new advisory role in Donald Trump's White House.
"I can't wait for 'DOGE,' the Department of Government Efficiency, to get in under the next administration and start making this government work more efficiently," said Burlison. "Because this town does need a purge. This town needs an enema. And honestly, I can't wait."
DOGE, which takes its name from a popular internet meme, is not a federal department, but rather an informal task force set up for Musk and fellow Trump loyalist Vivek Ramaswamy to come up with proposals to slash spending and eliminate large portions of the federal workforce. The idea aligns with Project 2025 proposals to reclassify most government workers to allow the president to fire them at will.

Musk is not expected to hold an actual Senate-confirmed federal office. However, Trump is keeping him close after the billionaire used his control of the X social media platform and his America PAC organization to run large portions of Trump's campaign field operations in battleground states. Their relationship has even reportedly reached the point of irritating many in Trump's inner circle.
While Trump may be able to carry out some of the mass layoffs unilaterally, it would require an act of Congress to eliminate or consolidate various federal agencies and departments.
This comes as Trump nominates controversial figures to key administrative roles, including WWE co-founder Linda McMahon for secretary of education and TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz to run the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — often bragging about how his picks will cut the government down to size.
