Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles offers relief on uncollected fees
LOUISIANA (KLFY) -- The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) has rolled out a new law that changes how overdue debts are handled, giving a much-needed break to hundreds of thousands of residents.
In a news release, Governor Jeff Landry said reforming the OMV's reinstatement program provides essential relief to our residents and gets more drivers back on the road and back to work.
The OMV is pulling back fees that were sent to the Office of Debt Recovery for help with collections.
The amount owed can be reset to the original fine.
OMV Commissioner Dan Casey explains how it works.
"Someone who may have owed as much as $10,000 and could never get back driving, it brings it back to our facility. It resets it and it could be $1,000," Casey said.
To take part, residents should contact the OMV as soon as possible.
"They could either pay that by credit card or they could get into a payment plan," Casey said.
According to the OMV, starting Dec. 31, any fees more than 180 days past due and still unresolved will be labeled as delinquent debt. This means the outstanding fees could be sent back to the Office of Debt Recovery.
Officials say more than 350,000 residents are saddled with unpaid fines.
