ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The federal deadline for flyers to get a REAL ID or Enhanced ID is May 7, 2025. This is the beginning of the requirement for everyone flying domestically in the U.S. to have a REAL ID, Enhanced ID, passport, or another form of federally compliant identification.
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recommends visiting one of its offices as soon as possible to the one of these required IDs even if their current form of identification is not due for renewal yet. The fee for a REAL ID does not cost more than the renewal fee for identification.
DMV offices encourage making a reservation online to secure a spot. There are also online resources to help make the application process as smooth as possible, including a document guide for what you need to bring for your appointment and an online pre-screening process.
Documents necessary for upgrading one's driver's license include one proof of identity, like a passport or birth certificate, proof of legal presence for non-U.S. citizens, two proofs of New York residency, your social security card, and a current driver's license if applying to exchange one issued by another state. Those applying for the upgrade must go in person to get one.
New Yorkers do have the option to stick with their regular driver's license instead of upgrading. However, this means they cannot board a domestic flight or access secure federal facilities, including military bases and some federal offices after the May 7 deadline unless they have a passport.
