CNN exit polls revealed that Kamala Harris was extremely popular with abortion extremists in the election but failed to win over those who said abortion should be legal in “most cases.”
She also surprisingly failed to raise more support among women than either Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton had in 2020 and 2016, which CNN called “a troubling sign for the vice president given that she tried to mobilize female voters on the issue of abortion.”
Voters who said abortion should be legal in all cases tended to support Harris significantly more than they had supported Biden in 2020, evidenced by the 15-point increase in votes for the Democratic presidential candidate between 2020 and 2024.

However, CNN noted, people with less extreme views on abortion didn’t necessarily vote for Harris. Even though voters who said abortion should be legal in most cases were more likely to vote for Biden in 2020, the same demographic was just as likely to vote for Trump in 2024 as they were to vote for Harris.
CNN’s exit polls also measured which age groups tended to vote Democratic or Republican and whether voters with a college degree were more likely to support a candidate. Harris won support from white voters with college degrees in 2024, which CNN reported was a demographic Trump narrowly won in the 2016 election.
CNN also noted that “Harris won White women with a college degree by about 15 points — an improvement over both Biden and Clinton,” but that “voters of color” with or without college degrees were less likely to vote for Harris than they had been for the two previous Democratic candidates.
It also reported that an “interesting shift” occurred among younger and older voters: the traditional voting preferences of both demographics seemed to trade places. Breaking the usual trend, fewer Americans aged 18-29 years old voted for Harris than voted for Clinton or Biden.
Americans aged 65 or older were just as likely to vote for Harris as they were to vote for Trump, another surprising discovery in a demographic that traditionally leans towards Republican presidential candidates.
