Bears Charge Past Warriors

HAVILAND, KS – September 3, 2016 – The Calvary University Warriors (0-2, 0-2 MCCC) lost their second game of the season on the road at Barclay College (1-1, 1-1 MCCC), losing a hard fought match by a final score of 4-1.

The first half was a defensive battle between the two teams with the Bears scoring the only goal in the 7th minute off a penalty kick from Barclay’s Brenton Newby. Despite the Bears maintaining control of the ball for much of the first half, the Warriors were able to create good scoring opportunities, but could not get the ball in the back of the net. However, the Warrior’s defense was able to keep the Bears from scoring the rest of the half.

In the second half, the Warriors came out strong, with Mark Rodenberg scoring their only goal of the game off a free kick in the 55th minute. The Warrior’s defense was able to hold off the Bears attack, but their lack of substitutes eventually sealed the Warrior’s fate allowing Barclay to score three goals in the 68th, 76th, and 84th minutes.

“I thought our guys played very very well, despite playing the second game in a row where we only had eleven players,” said head coach Daniel Nichols. “We were able to tie the game 1 to 1, and I’d say in the first 65 to 70 minutes, we created just as good or better scoring chances than the Bears. [We] seemed to run out of energy towards the latter part of the game, especially in the last 20 minutes. Tired legs led to some mistakes in the back, and they were able to score three late goals. [I am] definitely encouraged to see their hard work and perseverance, as well as the steps that they made in improving.”

The road Warriors continue their season next Saturday, September 10, playing Central Christian College of the Bible at 2:00 PM CST in Moberly, MO.
