NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York City has issued a red flag warning that will stay in effect until 6 p.m. Friday.
A notice on the NotifyNYC social media account says, New Yorkers may see or smell smoke because of multiple wildfires burning in New Jersey.
“Exercise caution w/ outdoor flames. Immediately report fires to 911,” the notice reads.
A total of nine wildfires are currently burning throughout New Jersey, according to the state’s Forest Fire Service. The fire burning nearest to New York is the Industrial Parkway Wildfire in Essex County.
The fires come amid dry weather, record temperatures, and drought watches in New York and New Jersey. Officials say these conditions have contributed to higher fire risk.
Below are tips on how to stay safe during a red flag warning, as outlined by the New York City Health Department.
