PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Authorities have revealed that a Portland nurse, initially reported as missing, was murdered while vacationing in Hungary.
According to a Budapest Police Headquarters announcement translated into English, the suspect in the death of Mackenzie “Kenzie” Michalski was arrested on Friday. The agency said the 31-year-old woman disappeared on Nov. 5 after being spotted at a Budapest nightclub.
Officials reported that investigators “noticed several suspicious circumstances” involving her disappearance. Police then located and identified the 37-year-old Irish man she was seen with in several clubs.
During an interrogation, the man gave law enforcement a statement and showed them where he hid Michalski’s body, BPH said. He is now in police custody.
Michalski worked as a neurosurgery nurse practitioner at Providence St. Vincent. The medical center said its community is “deeply saddened by the news” of her death.
“Those who worked with her and knew her best say Kenzie was kind and loving — a great friend and a valued caregiver who lived out our Providence mission and values in her daily life,” Providence added in a statement. “This loss of a beloved member of our Providence family is especially difficult, as it follows the death of Melissa Jubane in September.”
This is a developing story.
