Street art in divided capitals
Nicosia’s division makes headlines often and it is what comes to the minds of many when describing life in the city. Over the course of history, it has not been the only divided capital in the world. It shares this characteristic with Berlin, a city now known for its urban, edgy art.
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German embassy hosts an event next Friday which explores the connection between history and community. What does this have to do with Nicosia and Cyprus? A local street artist, active in the capital’s urban landscape, is an invited speaker at the event, held at the Goethe Institute.
Participating in the panel is also Anna von Arnim-Rosenthal, Director of the East Side Gallery in Berlin. The East Side Gallery is an outdoor art gallery built on a preserved section of the Berlin Wall. Immediately after the fall of the wall, artists transformed the former edifice into a 1.3km long artwork. With over 100 pieces of graffiti created by artists from around the world, the gallery reflects the themes of hope and reconciliation and is a reminder of the division of Germany.
Arnim-Rosenthal will share how the Berlin Wall was transformed from a symbol of the Cold War to a symbol of connection, dialogue, and reunification. Bringing in the Cypriot reality and creating this connection with Cyprus, well-known street artist Twenty Three will join facilitator Marios Epaminondas to talk about walls, separation and art.
