It’s been a while since Mac Jones started an NFL regular-season game, but it sounds like that’s going to change Sunday.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Thursday reported Trevor Lawrence was still receiving treatment on his left shoulder while “weighing options for the future.” While the severity of Lawrence’s injury remains unclear, he’s “unlikely” to play in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 10 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, per Rapoport.
If the 2021 No. 1 overall pick can’t go Sunday and the Jags stick to the structure of their quarterback depth chart, Mac Jones will take the field this weekend at EverBank Stadium. It would mark the former New England Patriot’s first start since Week 12 of the 2023 season.
Jones, who the Patriots drafted 14 picks after Lawrence went off the board, was traded to Jacksonville in mid-March. The Alabama product impressed in his first summer with the Jaguars and beat out eighth-year pro C.J. Beathard for the backup quarterback job. Jones made two brief relief appearances over Jacksonville’s first six games, including a nightmarish outing in Buffalo.
Trying to lead the Jaguars while Lawrence is sidelined won’t be easy for Jones. Jacksonville entered Week 10 tied for the worst record in all of football.
