NHL Player Recovering After Scary on-Ice Injury
Hockey player Dylan Holloway had to be carted off the ice on a stretcher during Tuesday night’s game after suffering an excruciating injury.
The St. Louis Blues forward was rushed from the rink on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital after an airborne puck hit him in the throat. ESPN captured dramatic footage of the moment, which shows Holloway clutching his neck and skating to his team’s bench. Medical personnel check his neck and stabilize him as Holloway continues to feel around his face, looking somewhat dazed. He was taken to a nearby hospital for “continued monitoring” and is currently in stable condition, per the NHL.
“I was just sitting beside him and saw something was happening,” Alexey Toropchenko, Holloway’s teammate, told The Associated Press following the match. “I was just kind of curious to what’s going on. Doctors came in and, like, I think everything is good right now. But we were worried, everybody.”
Drew Bannister, the Blues’ head coach, told the league that hearing about Holloway’s injury was tough, but he’s proud for the resilience his team showed. "I think the only way I can put it to you guys is if you're at work, you get a call that one of your family members is sick and rushed to the hospital," he explained.
“Holly is a family member,” Bannister continued. That was a tough. I thought we, as a group, showed a lot of fortitude mentally being able to push through that…We were able to get updates on Holly and kind of put our minds at ease a little bit, and we focused ourselves.”
As for Holloway’s current condition, Bannister reports: "From what we've heard, he's doing well. It's a good sign."
