BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana swung its eight electoral votes behind former president Donald Trump on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The Associated Press called the state for Trump shortly after polls closed.
Later in the evening, complete but unofficial results on the Louisiana Secretary of State website showed that the former president drew 60% of the votes cast. Vice President Kamala Harris had 38%. No other candidates drew a percentage of the 2 million ballots cast across the state.
As of 11:57 p.m. CST on Tuesday, Nov. 5, neither Trump nor Harris had enough electoral college votes to declare victory nationally.
According to political aggregation site 270towin.com, Louisiana has supported Republican presidential candidates consistently since 2000. Support ranged from 52.6% to 58.5%.
In 2020, the state supported Trump with 58.5% of the total vote; in 2016, he took 58.1% of the vote.
