Live map shows US presidential race results state by state
Millions of Americans around the country have cast their vote in the 2024 US Presidential Election to select the next leader of the country.
The Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, and the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, have been locked in a close race, but Trump has now declared himself victorious after winning key battleground states.
These include swing states North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Georgia, as well as South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Ohio and others.
The other swing states — Arizona, Michigan and Nevada — are all leaning Republican as the counts are underway.
Harris has won Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, DC, Maryland, Illinois, New Hampshire, Hawaii and Colorado, among others, and is projected to win Maine.
Results for some states will take days to come in, even after polls closed in all 50.
The longest it has taken to decide an election in modern history was in 2000 when Republican George W Bush was elected president over Democratic candidate Al Gore.
It took 35 days for the result to be announced after the election came down to just one state: Florida.
What are swing states?
‘Swing states’ are those of the 50 United States where both major political parties have a genuine chance of winning over the majority of voters in a presidential election.
For this election, the seven states that both the Democrats and Republicans agreed meet the criteria for being swing states, are: Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin and, of course, Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania has 19 electoral votes, which is the most of any swing state.
The candidates were separated by just a few hundred votes in the state, leading to a recount.
Eventually, the US Supreme Court ruled in Bush’s favour, halting the recount and resulting in him becoming president.
