Democrat Emily Randall was projected to win her bid for Washington’s 6th Congressional District Tuesday, making history as the first woman and openly LGBTQ person elected to represent the district in Congress.
Randall, a two-term Washington state senator, defeated her opponent, Republican state Sen. Drew MacEwen, according to Decision Desk HQ. She was heavily favored to win election in the deep-blue district, which Democrats have controlled since 1965.
A former LGBTQ and abortion rights organizer, Randall credits the 2016 election of former President Trump with inspiring her to run for office. In 2018, she flipped one of the state’s most competitive senate districts for Democrats, winning by just 102 votes and helping Democrats regain control of the state’s upper chamber.
Randall’s Congressional campaign centered on expanding access to affordable health care, reproductive rights and education.
