Capris are perfect for this time of year. Hear us out: They are not exactly a pair of shorts and not exactly a pair of pants, but they’re versatile enough to meet this weird weather moment. But if you are like us and can’t bear having your calves on display, The Cut’s fashion director Jessica Willis has created a look you’ll want to wear, no matter what you have planned. Read on for a full breakdown of the look.
Look for capris with a high waist that hit right below the calf

You’re not alone in your hesitance to wear capris; the style can be divisive. The key to getting a pair you love is working with your proportions. For this look, Willis started with a high-waisted pair from Ferragamo. With a slim fit and a material that has a little sheen, these are easy for Willis to dress up or down.
When you’re in the fitting room trying on pairs of capris or browsing a site, look for a pair that hits right below you calf, Willis advises. If you’re shorter and want to elongate your leg look for pairs that hit right below the knee.
How wide you want your capris to be at the calf usually depends on the length Willis says. “The longer capris are sometimes, the skinnier they’ll be in the leg,” she explains. “If you get capris that are a little bit shorter, they’ll be wider at the bottom.” Willis opted for a cleaner look with this slim-leg pair.
Then add a cropped layer to emphasize your shape

Layer on a cropped sweater to emphasize your shape. Willis’s layer of choice is a sheer shirt from Khaite over a cropped top from Toteme. It’ll keep you covered but not too covered, she explains. The oversize shirt is a classic: “Button it all the way up so it billows out a little.”
Add a pair of strappy sandals
“I wanted to make it feel more dressed up, so I added a heel,” Willis says of the Bottega Veneta heels. You could also wear your capris with slim, form-fitting knee-high boots or loafers. She also suggests pairing the sandals with colorful, sheer tights.
Play up your accessories

Since this look is simple and classic, Willis suggests adding accessories to make it feel more modern and fresh. Starting with a belt from Khaite, the buckle adds some interest. Next, the bag from Bottega Veneta with cool metal details and an interesting shape; plus it holds just about anything you’ll need.
