OS1 Coffee Table is a minimal coffee table created by Nigeria-based designer Olorunfemi Adewuyi. Omi, a design studio drawing inspiration from the Yoruba word for water, approaches furniture and object creation with a focus on fluidity. Their practice blends traditional Nigerian craft techniques with modern production methods, resulting in pieces that bridge the old and new. By incorporating age-old methods such as timber carving and bronze casting, particularly from Benin City, Omi seeks to revive and sustain craftsmanship that has largely disappeared from southern Nigeria. Their latest collection, Series 1, exemplifies this mission.
It draws from historical bronze and carving guilds to create functional yet collectible objects. One notable piece in the series is a coffee table that explores the concept of communal interaction through abstract design. The table features three hand-carved wooden tabletops of varying sizes, connected by a bronze T-cast using traditional techniques from Benin. The recurring motif of curved forms ending in straight lines is a defining feature throughout the series, present on both tabletops and legs, offering a balance between sensuality and precision.
