While fans are excited by Meryl Streep’s rumored romance with Martin Short in real life, the three-time Oscar winner was emotional about being paired up with the comedian onscreen. In Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building co-stars began a fictional love story that made Streep very emotional, according to co-creator John Hoffman.
Hoffman spoke with Decider and revealed a sweet moment during a night shoot when Streep got emotional with him.
“I remember one night we were shooting on the ferry in Episode 5 of Season 3. We shot until about two in the morning on the most gorgeous night in Manhattan,” he told the media outlet. “I got off to gangplank there and Meryl was waiting, and she had tears in her eyes, and she said, ‘I just had to wait here for you to get off the boat to say thank you.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ and she said, ‘I just got to play a scene I really thought that the likes of which I wouldn’t have a chance to do. To play romantic scenes at this age with this band in this way, it’s just the greatest thing ever.’”
Even Streep, who is deemed one of the best actresses of her generation, feels the effect of ageism in Hollywood — and remember, she’s 75 and Short is 74. It’s a shocking thought, but it’s the reality of the entertainment industry. Hoffman described his feelings after her tearful moment with him.
“And I felt, of course, like the luckiest guy in the world to have her anywhere near a set that I was near,” he added. “So that felt like one of the most gratifying things. And I kept on thinking like, ‘I hope the world falls in love with this couple the way we all are.’ And that is so due to the magic that they create together.” One of the most important aspects of Short and Streep’s love is that age isn’t a core focus of their relationship — and it might be why fans are so excited about the dynamic duo in real life.
Streep and Short have tried hard to keep their reported romance under wraps, but their co-stars, including Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, keep outing them. Martin’s third-wheel post on Instagram might have been the most reliable confirmation that his besties are canoodling. Still, Short tried hard to get fans to believe that they are “not a couple, [we] are just very close friends,” per his Club Random podcast appearance in January.
