Democratic strategist Maria Cardona on Monday said that former President Donald Trump may have made a critical error when he held a rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday that was marked by racist and misogynistic rhetoric.
During an appearance on CNN, Cardona said that the Trump rally was "jaw-dropping" and that ridicule of Puerto Rico as an island of "garbage" was particularly offensive.
"It was not just deeply offensive and incredibly insulting," she said. "As a strategist I thought it was so, so stupid. I mean, they are not just insulting Puerto Ricans on the island. They are insulting Latinos in general and Puertorriqueños that live in battleground states.
"There are almost a million Puertorriqueños and Latinos who live in the battleground states. Here you have Donald Trump and all of his speakers in all their anti-immigrant hatred, anti-Latino glory as their closing argument in this really, very close campaign? How is that smart?"

Cardona then pointed out how the insults aimed at Puerto Rico had galvanized Puerto Rican stars such as Bad Bunny and Ricky Martin, who shared Vice President Kamala Harris's message to their tens of millions of social media followers.
She then predicted that it would deliver an electoral blow "to Donald Trump's head" on election day.
