Mark Robinson owes North Carolina Highway Patrol $14,000 — he still hasn’t paid: records

North Carolina Lt. Governor Mark Robinson owes the state's Highway Patrol about $14,000 and he hasn't paid it back yet, claimed one left-leaning super PAC in a press release.

American Bridge, known for its research and videos to bring down Republican candidates, sorted through Robinson's financial travel for 2023 and found that he claimed to have traveled 22,000 miles for the campaign out of his total 23,000 miles of travel.

"With a reimbursement rate of 65.5 cents per mile, Robinson should have reimbursed the state more than $14,000, but didn’t even pay back $10,000 of what he owed," said American Bridge linking to the State Board of Elections data on the "Friends for Mark Robinson" campaign committee.

“Once again, Mark Robinson is taking advantage of North Carolina taxpayers, just like he did with his family’s nonprofit, which now owes the state over $130,000,” said American Bridge spokesperson Philip Shulman. “It’s clear Mark Robinson is nothing more than a grifter who’s looking to become governor so he can rip off North Carolinians even more.”

One key issue for Robinson's campaign is that as lieutenant governor, Robinson rarely showed up to work.

WUNC reported in September that the Senate sessions and board meetings where Robinson should have appeared and found that he was absent from them at an unprecedented rate.

“The lieutenant governor has been the most absent elected official in my 16 years in Raleigh,” State Treasurer Dale Folwell told WUNC at the time.

“I’ve never seen him at the community college board meetings as we’ve had to hire and fire two presidents. I rarely see him at the State Board of Education meetings, and you can look at what his attendance rate is on presiding over the Senate," Folwell also said.
