TOPEKA (KSNT) - Agents with the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) visited two restaurants recently, seizing their assets after they failed to pay off their taxes.
Aubrey Challquist with the KDOR told 27 News two separate restaurants were forced to close recently as they did not pay off sales taxes owed to the state. Agents with the KDOR and local law enforcement participated in the seizures which targeted assets associated with the two businesses.
KDOR agents and local sheriff's deputies seized things like bank accounts, on-site cash, business inventory and personal property during the execution of their tax warrants. Assets taken during the seizures will be sold at public auctions to pay off the delinquent taxes. Both businesses were also sealed shut with a public notice posted outside.
Challquist said the KDOR visits businesses which owe taxes to the state following efforts to work with the taxpayers and enter them into repayment agreements. People who continue to fail to meet collection attempts will ultimately be visited by KDOR agents.
"KDOR’s responsibility to recover delinquent taxes not only ensures fairness for individuals and business owners who do pay their taxes, but also ensures that money is lawfully collected to fund state and local programs on which Kansans depend," Challquist said. "These programs include education, highways, public safety, and human services."
