Tottenham Hotspur are set to put off their pursuit of a Championship starlet after finding out that a deal may not be possible in January.
It has emerged that Ange Postecoglou wants to bolster his options in the middle of the park when the transfer window opens in January.
After successfully signing Archie Gray from Leeds United in the summer, Tottenham are now thought to have their eyes on another of the Championship’s best-emerging talents.
According to GiveMeSport, the Lilywhites are plotting a move for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, who continues to win admirers with his impressive displays at the Riverside Stadium.
The report says that Spurs and Newcastle have both expressed an interest in Hackney but have now learned that the deal for the Englishman would be difficult to pull off in January.
This is because Boro have ruled out sanctioning a sale mid-season, given how important the 22-year-old is to Michael Carrick’s set-up.
It is alleged that Spurs may not decide to turn to alternative options in January after the Championship club indicated to them that there is ‘no possibility’ of them being tempted into the sale in the upcoming transfer window.
However, GiveMeSport say that Spurs may not be prepared to abandon their pursuit of Hackney yet as they are ‘long-term admirers’ of the youngster.
Instead, Postecoglou’s men may remain patient and decide to go back in for the player next summer, with the England Under-21 international expected to be available for a fee of around £25m at the end of the season.
However, the publication adds that should Spurs decide to wait until next summer, they may also face additional competition from Manchester United, who are also said to be keeping an eye on Hackney’s progress.
