Catholic Archbishop Encourages Pro-Life Catholic Doctors
Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of the Archdiocese of San Francisco encouraged doctors at the annual “White Mass” for Catholic medical professionals, telling them, “You probably feel solidarity with early Christians.”
The Archdiocese reports that the Mass took place on October 18, the feast of St. Luke, the patron saint of physicians. Archbishop Cordileone’s homily focused on how St. Luke not only accompanied St. Paul in his journeys but also provided him with the physical healing he needed.
“The point is, Paul suffered physical ailments, and Luke was there at his side to give him aid, comfort in suffering, and healing. Luke, then, is a man who used his talents generously and with kindness, all for the sake of the proclamation of the Gospel,” the Archbishop said.
He also said that health care workers “participate in the work of Christ for his people, bringing about healing of body and soul.”

He continued, “You understand that your calling in life is to contribute to the healing of the whole person, not simply alleviating physical suffering in the quickest, easiest and most efficient way possible.”
Archbishop Cordileone thanked and blessed the doctors, nurses, and other workers at the end of the Mass.
At the reception after Mass, he thanked them again for their work, especially their effort to “bring Catholic values to an increasingly hostile environment.”
He added, “You probably feel a lot of solidarity with those early Christians when they were going out to a hostile world under Roman authorities.”
He also urged the medical professionals to vote against a San Francisco ballot measure that would target pregnancy resource centers, a measure that CatholicVote previously covered.
