Cranbrook, BC: The Vernon Vipers extended their winning streak to two games and halted the Cranbrook Bucks’ five-game unbeaten run with a gutsy 5-2 victory at Western Financial Place on Saturday night.
Goaltender Colin Reay stole the show as the game’s first star, delivering a standout performance with 28 saves on 30 shots. Reay’s heroics included two critical 10-bell saves that came at key moments, keeping the Bucks at bay and preserving the Vipers’ momentum.
Offensively, Vernon had contributions from up and down the lineup. Four Vipers recorded multi-point games, including Luke Bibby, Shea Busch, and Erik Pastro, each tallying one goal and one assist. Keaton Dowhaniuk also made his mark with two assists.
The game-winner came courtesy of Landon MacDonald, who netted his second goal of the season midway through the second period. Charlie Kresl sealed the win with one of two empty-net goals in the dying moments.
A key to the Vipers’ success was their flawless penalty kill, which went a perfect 5-for-5 against the BCHL’s top power play. This shut-down effort helped Vernon maintain control and keep Cranbrook’s dangerous unit off the scoresheet.
For the Bucks, Rasmus Svartstrom was the offensive standout, scoring both of Cranbrook’s goals. In goal, Jaden Cholette made 22 saves on 25 shots but couldn’t overcome the Vipers’ balanced attack.
