Sofia Richie Reveals She Was Hospitalized With Preeclampsia
After announcing her pregnancy with a Vogue photo shoot, Sofia Richie Grainge is ready to talk about the reality of delivering her baby. Eloise Samantha Grainge — the daughter of Richie and record executive Elliot Grainge — arrived in May on what Sofia then called the “best day” of her life. But on this week’s episode of the She MD podcast, the 26-year-old revealed that she was rushed back to the hospital two days after giving birth.
“I went home, and I blew up like a balloon. Quite literally, just swelled,” Richie said. “I felt very ill … and my blood pressure was 165 over 103.”
Podcast co-host and OB/GYN to the stars Dr. Thais Aliabadi identified the condition as postpartum preeclampsia, which can occur when a patient has both high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine post-birth. Richie said that she “hid in the closet and cried” because she didn’t want to leave her newborn to go back to the hospital.
“My poor husband was like, ‘I have to get you to the hospital because the doctor is saying it’s just not safe. It’s not safe that you’re home,’” she said. “So I spent 24 hours in the hospital and it was really, really, really hard.”
According to the Preeclampsia Foundation, postpartum preeclampsia impacts around 5 percent of all pregnancies and can cause seizures, strokes, and organ failure, among other risks. If untreated, the condition can become fatal. Despite the complications, Richie says she’s lucky to have had a “fantastic delivery.” “I gave birth and I was like, ‘Wow, I really did that,’” she said. “I have my beautiful daughter. I’m healthy. I’m safe. She’s healthy. She’s safe.”
