Massive Meat Recall Affects Popular Walmart, Trader Joes Products

Almost 10 million pounds of meat have recently been recalled due to possible listeria contamination in frozen dinners, fresh salads, and more from popular grocers like Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Target, Amazon Fresh, and Kroger as well as brands like Jenny Craig.

According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released Wednesday, approximately 9,986,245 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. 

Individuals who have consumed the bacteria may experience muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and more in as little as a few hours. While most people with listeriosis don't require treatment, others with more serious symptoms such as headaches, confusion, and loss of balance may need to be treated with antibiotics. 

According to the report, the affected meat and poultry items were produced from June 19, 2024, to October 8, 2024, and were shipped to establishments and distributors nationwide before being distributed to restaurants and institutions. 

The USDA determined that ready-to-eat chicken products are the source of the Listeria monocytogenes. The organization released a 203-page list of affected products, although it may not be entirely comprehensive. The labels include products from the aforementioned establishments as well as stores like HEB, 7 Eleven, Giant Eagle, Meijer, RaceTrac, Publix, and Wegmans. Affected brands also include Dole, Rao's, Atkins, and Signature Select.

The contaminated products originally contained establishment numbers "51205 or P-51205" inside or under the USDA mark of inspection, although the company has emphasized that further processing or distribution may cause them to bear different numbers. Most of the affected products are ready-to-eat salad, rice, or pasta bowls with chicken or turkey. 

While there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products it's important to check any products you fear may have been affected.
