ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — The New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) and the New York State Officer of General Services (OGS) are hosting the 2024 NYS Clothesline Project from Tuesday to Thursday. It's the fourth installment of this project at the Capitol, featuring a display of T-shirts decorated by survivors of domestic violence at the Concourse beneath Empire State Plaza.
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the project aims to educate and spread awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence by giving survivors the platform to break their silence, according to the OPDV. OPDV literature available at the installation addresses survivors of sexual assault directly, telling them, "What you are feeling is real" and urging them to come forward.

The 2024 NYS Clothesline Project also addresses people who are around assault survivors and don't know how to support them. They advise private, judgment-free conversations where victims receive support and validation.
The project began in 1990 in Massachusetts as a part of an annual "Take Back the Night" march and rally focused on bringing attention to violence against women by their intimate partners.
