Patriots’ Jerod Mayo Toes Line Of Taking Shot At Bill Belichick

There has been plenty of talk about how Drake Maye wasn’t set up to succeed when he was brought in by the New England Patriots.

A similar case could be made for Jerod Mayo.

Mayo inherited arguably the NFL’s weakest roster when he took over as Patriots head coach back in January. The poor personnel group has translated into lousy results, as New England will enter Week 7 tied for the lowest win percentage in the entire league.

Appearing on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” after the Patriots’ fifth straight loss, Mayo was asked why the roster was in such bad shape going into the offseason.

“You tell me,” Mayo said. “I’m not going there.”

Mayo bit his tongue, but you don’t have to be a football fanatic to read between the lines. Bill Belichick struggled mightily with roster construction in his final years in New England, which surely set the stage for his firing.

That said, Belichick doesn’t deserve the lion’s share of the blame for the Patriots’ 2024 shortcomings. Eliot Wolf was average at best in his first offseason running football operations in Foxboro, Mass., and Mayo and his staff haven’t yet offered much to write home about.

All things considered, plenty needs to change at One Patriot Place once this underwhelming campaign concludes.
