Afghanistan listed among the world’s poorest countries: World Bank Report

The World Bank has released a report stating that Afghanistan and Yemen are among the 26 poorest countries in the world, with around 40% of the population in the poorest countries residing in these two nations.

Reuters cited the World Bank report on Monday, October 14th, highlighting that the majority of low-income countries are located in sub-Saharan Africa, from Ethiopia to Chad and Congo.

The report estimates the annual household income in poor countries to be approximately $1,145, and these nations need assistance.

The World Bank described efforts to eliminate extreme poverty as unsuccessful and announced that the International Development Association (IDA) will soon hold a major summit in Washington to raise $100 billion to address the needs of poor countries.

According to the report, Afghanistan and Yemen remain among the 26 poorest countries in the world, with about 40% of the global population in extreme poverty living in these countries.

The bank emphasized that the current conditions in these poor countries are worse than during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report also indicated that since 2006, these countries have faced increasing debt and have been vulnerable to natural disasters.

It is worth noting that the International Development Association reviews its aid allocations to poor countries every three years.

In the past three years, the need for assistance in Afghanistan has grown significantly due to the halt of foreign aid, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the Afghan population.

The World Bank’s report illuminates persistent poverty in countries like Afghanistan and Yemen, where the effects of ongoing crises and a lack of international support have deepened poverty.

With global efforts, including the upcoming IDA summit, there is hope for raising the necessary funds to address these challenges. However, without sustained and coordinated international efforts, the plight of people in the world’s poorest nations may continue to worsen.
