Carl Sandstrom scored at 6:32 of overtime as the Alberni Valley Bulldogs knocked off the Prince George Spruce Kings 3-2 on Monday night at the BCHL Showcase.
Prince George local Brady McIsaac got the Bulldogs on the board at 13:50, picking the top corner to open the scoring from the left circle.
The game wouldn’t see many grade A chances, but with 16.6 seconds left in the second, Ethan Montroy’s centering pass hit a Bulldogs skate and went in past Ryder Shea to make it 1-1. Trent Ballentyne and Aidan Souligny drew the assists.
The game looked destined for overtime through most of the third period, until Brock Cummings made it 2-1 Prince George with 4:07 remaining, as he put a rebound past Shea off a Ty Paisley shot. Linden Makow drew the second assist.
The lead was short-lived, as Grayson Badger tied the game from Jonathan Wong and Sandstrom at 18:02, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, the teams traded chances, as Carter Wishart made a highlight reel save with his right toe, before the Spruce Kings had a great opportunity the other way.
Moments after Sandstrom missed ending the game on a backdoor pass, he would skate into the attacking zone and shoot against the grain, beating Wishart to end the game.
