Donald Trump’s presidential campaign on Monday used the occasion of Indigenous Peoples Day to attack Vice President Kamala Harris for her support of the Native American community. Trump’s attacks were amplified by right-wing media outlets, like Fox News.
Indigenous Peoples Day is being celebrated this year on Oct. 14. In an email to reporters, the Trump campaign alleged that Harris “wants to get rid of Columbus Day,” which is celebrated on the same day.
Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s national press secretary, said in a statement that Harris “wants to cancel American traditions like Columbus Day.” She added, “President Trump will make sure Christopher Columbus’ great legacy is honored and protect this holiday from radical leftists who want to erase our nation’s history like Kamala Harris.”
The campaign also posted a tweet with videos of Harris expressing support for the holiday, and said it was evidence that she had “radical left Marxist” beliefs.
The Trump campaign’s attack was amplified by friendly outlets like Fox News and the New York Post, both owned by conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch.
