Media reveal Afghan refugees beaten in Turkish Deportation Centers

According to findings from Politico, Spiegel, and other media outlets, Afghan and Syrian refugees in Turkish deportation centers have been subjected to abuse and mistreatment.

These reports indicate that while the centers were funded by the European Union, European officials have ignored the poor conditions within them.

The media findings reveal that Turkey, using resources and equipment provided by the European Union, has deported hundreds of thousands of Afghan and Syrian refugees.

At least €213 million from the EU budget was spent to construct and renovate 30 deportation centers in Turkey. Refugees in these centers face overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, abuse, and torture.

Many Afghan and Syrian refugees are reportedly forced, often violently, to sign documents for their “voluntary” return.

Refugees have reported being beaten and held in freezing rooms for up to 12 hours. They also claim that Turkish authorities have ignored their basic human rights.

Investigations show that these refugees have little to no access to legal counsel or contact with their families.

Despite widespread evidence of human rights violations in Turkish deportation centers, senior European Union officials have repeatedly overlooked these issues.

The situation for Afghan refugees in Turkey is dire, with reports of torture, harassment, and serious human rights abuses adding to their struggles.

Amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, these refugees face an uncertain future, lacking proper protection and enduring harsh treatment in Turkish detention facilities.
